Resort takeaway is shortlisted for this year's British Kebab Awards

A resort takeaway has been shortlisted for this year’s British Kebab Awards.

Medo kebab house on Eastbank Street is up for best takeaway outside London in the prestigious food awards, which honour the best kebabs in the country.

Adam Altuntot from Southport, has been in the business for more than 20 years and has owned the popular takeaway since 2009, employing three members of staff.

He told the Visiter: “This is great news for me and for Southport. I am hoping for a win but it is still good to come in the top 10.

“If you think about how many kebab houses there outside London it is amazing to be nominated – but I do think that we deserve to win.”

The British Kebab Awards, now in their third year, have become a fixture in the annual food awards calendar.

Nominations for the awards have been sought across a variety of categories including best value restaurant, best takeaway, best new restaurant and chef of the year – with judges and voters deciding on the winners.

The awards honour the classic takeaway through to the growing number of family restaurants serving kebab style food.

Currently there are 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK selling around 2,500 tonnes of lamb and chicken doner a week – with an estimated 1.3m kebabs sold by vendors every day.

The awards, which will be held at the beginning of January, and are being sponsored by the UK’s largest takeaway website JUST EAT, as well as Big K and Bulldog Energy Drinks, with the aim of showcasing the wide range of restaurants serving kebab styled food.

Ibrahim Dogus, Director Founder of the British Kebab Awards, said: “The British Kebab Awards are going from strength to strength.

“It is fantastic that we have this opportunity to recognise the work of businesses across the country, as well as highlight how varied the British kebab industry is, and the important contribution it makes to the economy.”
