MP to get a taste of the action as judge of British Kebab Awards
Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, has explained why he is on the judging panel for the 2018 British Kebab Awards as the UK’s kofte kings are pita’d against each other.
Mr Reynolds said: “My relationship with kebabs is entirely down to when I first arrived in Manchester in the late 1990s.
“This was exotic food compared to what I was used to, and the mix of barbecued chicken, salad, mint yoghurt and chilli sauce in a naan bread remains for me one of life’s premier delicacies.
“Back when I was a student if we couldn’t afford the real thing we use to get them with chips instead of the chicken, which is actually better than it sounds!
“We now have an excellent place just around the corner from us in Stalybridge, Tokies on Mottram Road.
“When I was invited to the kebab awards a few years ago, I selflessly volunteered to be a judge.
“In all seriousness, the year we first did it the winning shop saw its turnover increase 300-per-cent in the subsequent year, which is real business.
“It’s also a nice way to celebrate the contribution of the British-Turkish community, who really make this sector what it is and create a lot of jobs out of it.”
Joining Mr Reynolds, shadow economics secretary, on the judging panel are former Tory chairwoman Baroness Warsi, Children’s and Families’ Minister Nadhim Zahawi, Amjad Bashir MEP and Heart Radio presenter Lucy Horobin.
Kebab businesses in every corner of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are battling for gongs in 16 categories from best kebab van to best newcomer and chef of the year ahead of the sixth annual awards ceremony on March 12 in central London.
The public nominated 5,012 of their favourite kebab shops. These were whittled down to a shortlist of 153 based on public votes, with bonus points for nominations from MPs and councillors.
More than 1,200 guests, including more than 110 MPs and Lords, are expected to attend the British Kebab Awards VIP studded ceremony.
