Middleton takeaway shortlisted for British Kebab Awards
A takeaway has been shortlisted for the British Kebab Awards, the industry awards that scour the length and breadth of the country for the nation’s best kebab.
Barbecue in MIddelton has been nominated as the only local contender in the borough having made the shortlist for the ‘Best takeaway regional’ category.
The family-run business first opened its doors in 2000, serving traditional kebabs cooked in charcoal-fired clay ovens. The best-selling dish is chicken special kebab.
Owner Tahir Zahir said: “It has been 17 years and the kebabs have surely become the talk of the town. Every kebab house in the area was the same but I wanted to do something different, and we just specialise in kebabs.”
Barbecue faces tough competition from 11 other contenders in his category, featuring competition from Weymouth, Leeds, Bristol, Sheffield, London and Kent.
Mr Zahir added: “I feel rejoiced at being one of the takeaways and restaurants from the UK that are shortlisted for the sixth British Kebab Awards - it is a massive achievement itself.
"I enjoy my work and I think my effort and hard work over the years has finally been recognised.
"I thank my customers for nominating me and voting for me.”
Over 5,000 different businesses across the UK were put forward before being cut down to just 153 entries across 16 different categories, including chef of the year, best supplier and best value restaurant.
Winners of each category will be announced at a ceremony in London on 12 March.
