The gloves are off and the skewers are out as the UK's best kebabs are decided

Four Greater Manchester kebab shops are up for the industry’s highest accolade next week.

The British Kebab Awards 2018 take place in London on Monday night and have become a huge event in the six years they have been running.

The awards crown the best in class across a range of categories - and Greater Manchester is in the running too.

Kebabalicious in Wythenshawe and Urban Spice in Rusholme are up for the Just Eat delivery of the year award, with Erhan Karakoc from Royton’s Istanblue up for chef of the year.

Istanblue hit the headlines last year when it was shut down on the spot by health inspectors , who found cockroaches in a cutlery drawer, in fridges and on salad.

But following a change in management and a £450,000 revamp it reopened with a four-star food hygiene rating.

Urban Spice is also on the shortlist for the best value restaurants award, and Barbecue in Middleton competes in the best regional takeaway category.

Among the judges for Monday night’s awards are former Coronation Street actor and now MP for Batley and Spen, Tracy Brabin, and Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds.

The British Kebab Awards were started in 2012 as a way of raising standards in the industry. Each hygiene star a business has won from the Food standard Agency rating is worth 50 points. You also get points for being nominated by your local politician, The shortlisted kebab restaurants with the most points get through to the judges vote.
